A couple years ago I bought the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle. I loved it so much, that I have bought it ever since. Life is in the Sun

Life is in the Sun

We brought home our spring chickens last weekend and they were so calm and quiet that I worried they were sick. Our ducklings were happily buzzling all around their cage while the chickens were so worn out that their bodies looked like they were melting into the floor of the cage. I kept checking on them to make sure they were breathing. The next morning, the chickens were better but still lethargic as they hung out by the lamp and…

Different With a Purpose

Different With a Purpose

Yesterday we went to Tractor Supply to get some peeps and we ended up getting ducklings too. It’s amazing how different the chicks and ducks are. The ducks are quite lively and the chicks are super mellow.   We met the nicest gentleman in the store. He pointed out that the brown hens were on sale, which I was surprised to see were only a dollar each. We bought these a couple years ago and they produced eggs throughout the…

Spring Chickens

Spring Chickens

Our first adventure raising chickens was quite bumpy. We lost two chicks to pasty butt during the first week. Pasty butt is where the vent becomes clogged with dry feces. If your peep gets pasty butt, you can use warm water to get it off. Just keep an eye out for this by checking them periodically, once a day should be fine. The sooner you find it, the better chances you have at saving your chicks. We put wood shavings on the bottom…

Frankie the Ram

Frankie the Ram

Frankie was a sweet, gentle-hearted ram. I loved watching him run around the field with the rest of the flock. All four lambs would come trotting down the hill to see me every time I visited them. Their “baa” that echoed throughout the valley sounded like “maa.” It was precious. They would meet me at the inner gate, which is a strong inner fence where we keep the sheep safe at night. We call the area where they are…

Lamb Beginnings

Lamb Beginnings

Sheep are sweet, gentle creatures that enjoy eating. If a mother dies or rejects a lamb, they must be bottle fed. Last year we picked up three ram lambs and one ewe lamb at our local monastery. The lambs needed to be kept warm and fed every four hours.  To keep them safe and warm, we put them in our shed and kept them in medium sized dog kennels with hay beds. Two lambs fit in each kennel, so they…

Easy Instant Pot Ham and Potato Soup

Easy Instant Pot Ham and Potato Soup

I awoke to a little snow on the ground this morning. The fresh snowfall covered the muddy ground and made everything look new, it also gave me a reason to make homemade soup. I had some leftover ham and fresh vegetables in the fridge, so I decided to give Ham and Potato soup a whirl. It was my first time making that in the Instant Pot and it was fabulous! First, I cut up my fresh vegetables and ham and put them…

Black and White Bean Brownies

Black and White Bean Brownies

Black bean brownies have become a popular go-to when I want a healthy snack, and because of my Instant Pot, it only takes 45 minutes to cook dry beans. I don’t even soak them! I decided to make a batch of bean brownies one afternoon, but instead of just using black beans, I combined them with pinto beans. They were marvelous. Everyone loved them! First, I whisked the cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Next,…

Pinto Bean Ginger-cakes

Pinto Bean Ginger-cakes

I remember the first time I had gingerbread. My sweet neighbor heard we weren’t feeling well and sent her son over with a small basket of gingerbread muffins. After one bite, I knew I found a new comfort food. They are especially good with a hot cup of tea on an icy, cold day. I’ve been craving gingerbread lately, so I decided to whip up a healthy version of gingerbread. After experimenting in the kitchen for a few days, I came…

Destined for Greatness

Destined for Greatness

Our puppy Trixie is the perfect breed for herding sheep. She is three parts Australian Shepherd and one part Border Collie. It’s in her blood. It didn’t take her long to realize that if she chased the sheep, they would run. With our guidance, Trixie would direct the sheep to their pen. It was fun to watch that eight-week-old puppy come flying down the hill with the sheep. After her little run, she would take a break next to the…
